JEMEZ SPRINGS (KRQE) – With spring in the air, it's time for New Mexico anglers to enjoy the state's fantastic fishing options. Monday, April 1, the 2024-2025 fishing season begins in the Valles Caldera.
“We look forward to providing another wonderful season of world-class fishing to the angling community.” Valles Caldera Superintendent Jorge Silva-Bañuelos said. The National Park Service (NPS) site offers prime trout fishing.
Throughout the entire Valles Caldera, fishing waters are "Special Trout Waters" as defined by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. That means there is a two-trout bag limit, and only artificial flies and single-barbless hook lures are allowed, according to NPS.
A New Mexico fishing license is required for anglers in the Valles Caldera, along with a special use permit. If you want to access waters in the backcountry, you will also need a backcountry vehicle pass.
Before you plan a fishing trip, make sure to check the Valles Caldera's website for information on weather-related closures.
