NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The New Mexico Environment Department is offering residents around Cannon Air Force Base free water testing for PFAS contamination.

The department said this comes as a direct result of residents' testimonies late last month with the department during a public meeting.

The department said the federal government has failed to clean up the PFAS chemicals, commonly found in firefighting foams, since the contamination was confirmed in 2018.

Testing is available for up to 150 households on a first-come, first-serve basis with testing expected to begin in October.

Neighbors of Cannon Air Force Base are fatigued and frustrated with the U.S. Department of Defense marginalizing their physical and mental health every time they use their well water. My message to the residents who live around Cannon Air Force Base is simple: you and your families deserve safe drinking water. We will do everything in our power to make sure that you get it.

Environment Secretary James Kenney
