NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Crews are making progress on clearing a sediment plug in the Rio Chama.
The State Engineer's Office said heavy rainfall last month caused a sediment plug to form in the river, forcing the Abiquiu Reservoir to limit its water releases. That has led to lower water levels through the Middle Rio Grande.
The Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District said last week's rain helped the situation, but the levels remain a concern.
Crews have spent the last few weeks building channels so the water can flow smoothly again. The conservancy district expects the situation to improve this week.
